by: Dr. Nirmala Mani Adhikary

Taken from the paper “Theory Building through Research: An Exposition from Bharatavarshiya Perspective” Presented at at the Two Day National Seminar on Cultivating Research Culture in Media at Malviya Bhavan, New Delhi, India organized by Noida Campus of MC National University of Journalism and Communication (2013 April 6-7)

Abstract

Drawing on classical Sanskrit text Charaka Samhita, the paper explores a Bharatavarshiya version of theorization. The discourse on theory building in communication and other disciplines of knowledge has been Eurocentric. The tendency of considering theory as a product of the Renaissance and the Enlightenment of Europe traces the foundations of theorization to European classical philosophies. The paper sheds lights on an alternative to such Eurocentric notion.

Key words: Bharatavarsha, Communication, Theorization, Theory building
